Urban communities in Medieval Azerbaijan: shedding new light on the historical city of Bardhaʿa (Barda)

On 23 September 2020, the ONGC organised a joint onlince conference with the British Council in Azerbaijan on the ongoing archaeological survey and excavation of Barda, in modern Azerbaijan. The conference stimulated a lively Q&A discussion and attracted a worldwide live audience of 1.3k. Paul Wordsworth gave an overview of excavations of the city and landscape of medieval Barda; Ashleigh Haruda discussed the zooarchaeological remains of the city; Katie Campbell presented Barda's 14th century towers; and the audience also heard about David Stone's findings on the plant life of medieval Barda. Her Majesty's Ambassador to Azerbaijan, James Sharp, and British Council's Country Director in Azerbaijan, Summer Xia, also participated in the conference, as well as Edmund Herzig, the ONGC Director, and Leyla Najafzada, the ONGC Administrator.
